Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog for another post. So as you may or may not know. I love music. It’s a mahoosive part of my life and it always has been. So I wanna start writing about it. So to kick off my posts about music I wanted to share some tips with you. So I have had Spotify premium for about 4 years now so I feel like I understand it and know it pretty well. I mean, I use it every single day. Along the way I have learnt and taught myself some cool tricks in this app that have really helped to get the most out of what I’m paying for. I just love using Spotify and I think it’s an essential app to have on your phone, tablet and even laptop. So I wanna share with you all: My top tips on how to get the most out of Spotify. 1. Create your own playlists. You can make them just how you like them with all the songs YOU like. And it can be for any mood. I personally love making playlists and I find it quite relaxing to do but also exciting because you go on a musical journey to get the final result but for me it’s ongoing and I’m adding songs to my playlists virtually every day. Making your own playlists is really fun and means you can explore a whole range of music. You can make a playlist for anything and it can be a short one, a long one or literally any length you want. I start mine short but then I get carried away and over time they get reallyyyy long. Like my most played one: my chill playlist only had abut 90 songs in it when I first created it and was happy with it (that’s short for me). But now it has 300 songs in it because I keep exploring and finding cool songs that I wanna add to it and thats the beauty of making playlists. They are YOURS and you can do whatever you want with them. 2. Be active on there. The more you use it the better your recommendations are and will be down the line as the app will give you suggestions based on what you’re listening to. My suggestions are pretty damn good nowadays compared to when I first started using it because I use the app so much it really knows what I like and what I choose to listen to daily and it also sees what you skip as well, especially on the daily mixes and the radio. If you don’t like something on there you can tap a button and it wont play that artist or song in a daily mix or in that radio station anymore. So its filtered based on your preferences. But this will get better the more you use it and now I VERY rarely have to tap the button to stop an artist being played because the app just chooses all the good shit that I like. 3. Follow playlists. These are an easy way to still listen to the music you love from artists you know, love and are used to. But there are so many playlists out there. Some are made by Spotify themselves for a multitude or reasons, moods, genres or settings. I follow so many of Spotify’s playlists. They are easy to access / find and there is something for everyone. Or you can follow playlists made by your friends, family and anyone else you may know as well. But the playlists made by Spotify are often updated daily or every few days meaning they are always fresh and it’s an easy way to find new tracks and artists that you haven’t heard of before. You never know: you might find an artists you go on to love for a very long time through this. I love following playlists. Means I have lots of music for all sorts of occasions at my fingertips and I can simply just press play on one and know that it’s gonna be good. 4. Use the pre save function. Now this is cool. This is a relatively new thing from Spotify and it’s basically the streaming service equivalent of pre ordering an album on the iTunes Store. When you get the option to pre save something you click a link, usually shared by the artist (Ariana Grande did this with her albums sweetener and thank u, next so that’s how I know it works), and then the app will automatically save the whole album for you into your saved library in the app as soon as it is released or available wherever you are in the world. So you get the music asap without thinking about it or having to do anything. Therefore you can enjoy it straight away and using pre save avoids you forgetting about new releases because it’s all done for you. Genius I say. 5. Use the radio feature. You can create a radio from anything. An artist you like, an album and even from one individual song. So then you get given suggestions that are similar to what you created the radio from. Therefore this is another way to discover new artists and music. You can follow the radios that Spotify creates so you can go back to it whenever you want to. The radio function has helped me find so many cool artists that I now listen to all the time. 6. At the bottom of playlists you create yourself there are suggested songs play them and see if they fit the niche or if you like them. You can add all of them, one of them or none of them if you dont like them. But you can also refresh the suggestion list so if you’ve taken all the ones you like out of the 6 ish that are there you can get more suggestions and that way you can add to your playlist really quickly and easily. 7. Use the ‘Made For You’ section. On mine I have 6 daily mixes. They change every single day so it is constantly fresh. I have 6 because my music taste is so wide, broad and varied but most people have at least 2/3. You may only get 1 daily mix when you first start using them because the app wont know how to categorise your music taste yet and it wont know what you like until you start using it more. Mine range from: music I play everyday or very frequently (so pop music from recent years), movie soundtracks and classical, a 90’s, 80’s and 00’s one, an urban one (basically artists like Drake, Migos and 2 Chainz), an indie artist / indie bands one and a dance / edm one. If you dont know what you feel like listening to or just want something in the background while you chill, read, study or whatever these are great. Plus they can help you find new music or rediscover a song you forgot about. 8. Follow your favourite artists. This way if anything new gets released you get a notification, you can tailor these in the app and / or in your phone settings and then you won’t miss a single new release or update from that artist.
9. If you can afford it, get premium. Spotify frequently have offers on and students can get it cheaper and it’s so worth it. On premium there are no ads so your music is not interrupted and the best part: OFFLINE DOWNLOADS. Having songs offline is a life saver for me. Especially for travelling because it means I can still listen to all my hand made playlists and my fave artists while I’m flying and dont have wifi. Also, if you dont have much data on your phone streaming songs you’ve downloaded doesn’t use any data and you could literally switch your data off if you wanted to so you can save it for other things…like reading blog posts :) 10. Enjoy listening to music. Music is such a beautiful and expressive art form and it can make you feel a whole spectrum of emotions. It deserves all the appreciation and love it can get. So explore new things and enjoy yourself. And that's the lot. These are my top tips to get the most out of using Spotify. To all the apple music users out there… I’m sorry I just can’t take to it. I have tried but I just find Spotify better. I associate apple with buying music not streaming it. But I hope you enjoyed reading those and please please please let me know if you like any of them, learnt something new or if you give any of them a try at some point. They mainly just take a bit of time to do and put into practise. And I should say that the results are by no means instant but persist with it and it will SO be worth it. I can’t wait to start writing more posts about music, it’s something I can talk about for a loooong time and I have lots of ideas for posts already so standby for those. But for now I will say byeeee and I’ll see you all soon for another post. Love Jade xxx
