Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog for another post. So this is something different and I know that it wont interest or appeal to everyone out there. Buttt I had the idea and I haven’t seen it anywhere else so I thought I would have a shot at it. So as you may or may not know. Due to my chronic illness, IBS, I have had to make some dietary changes and I do now in a way have a dietary requirement. Which is something new to me which I am still getting used to. That requirement is that I have had to dramatically reduce the amount of dairy I have and consume. This has not been easy but I have fortunately adjusted to it and I know that it’s working. But along the way I have learned a few things, hacks I you will, on how to still have my fave things (mainly coffee based things) and not have to miss out just because of dairy. So in this post I am gonna make a list for you of how I have and ask for ALL my drinks. Be them hot, cold, Starbucks or at home. I’ll also add in some recommendation on alternatives that I love and trust. Then if anyone out there wants to reduce dairy for whatever reason, is doing a vegan challenge like Veganuary or has to go dairy free like me due to an illness or allergy you can use this to refer to as and when you need it. But I will say this. Like any diet change. It takes time to adjust and at first, like I was, you will probably hate it. But now my taste buds have changed and I have gotten used to it all and it feels like second nature to me now. Most things taste pretty much the same as before but your taste buds will adjust to it eventually if you can tell a difference.
Key terms: Soya Almond Oat Original - Also the same as sweetened. Some packaging says original and some say sweetened. Unsweetened Alternative Milk Plant Based Milk Hot Drinks: Tea - I use PG Tips tea bags and I use Soya Original milk in it. Or if you cant have soya, Almond Milk Original is pretty good too. Coffee - This is where it gets complicated. Costa Latte. Get almond milk in this. You get the taste of coffee and not much almond I swear. Only thing is that it look darker than normal but I swear the strength isn’t higher. Costa Flat White. Get coconut milk in this one, it’s unique but tastes so good!! Blonde Roast Latte with Vanilla Syrup at Starbucks - Get Almond Milk in this one. PSL - Get Almond milk in this. You cant taste anything except the PSL I swear. I was actually shook at how similar it tasted to the normal milk version. It was basically the same. Fruit Tea - At home I have the Instant Teas from Whittard of Chelsea. They come in a range of flavours and don’t have the nasty aftertaste that some tea bag, green teas and herbal teas can leave in your mouth. My fave flavours are the Lychee and Mango, Dreamtime and Strawberry and Vanilla ones but there are loads. Some I haven’t even tried yet. But I love these because they require NO MILK OF ANY KIND. So if you hate the plant milks but wanna cut down dairy and still have a nice drink, go for these instant teas. Independent Coffee Shops - now these places often have a wider variety of plant milks which is GREAT. So when I go independent I usually choose to have a latte because it’s my fave way to have coffee. Whenever I get one I ALWAYS have Oat Milk in it. For some reason oat milk just picks up the coffee flavours really well and the latte tastes creamy even when it couldn’t be further from it: no cream or dairy in sight. So many people swear by Oat Milk lattes and it’s clear to see why. Cold Drinks: the general rule is soya milk for cold drinks. Soya in my opinion is the ‘creamiest’ of them all and is the closest to dairy so it goes with stuff the best. I don’t have it hot because I think it tastes funny when it’s hot. I tried it once and was nearly sick lolz. Costa Iced Latte - get soya milk in this one!!! Costa Frappe - I haven't actually tried this yet but I imagine soya milk would be the best option here. Starbucks Iced Chai Latte - get soya milk in this once. This is probably my fave cold drink at Starbucks aside from the PSL frappe. But you can get this one all year long. Yay!! Starbucks PSL Frappe - get this with soya milk. Tastes EXACTLY like the diary version I swear. I had to check my cup to see if they had written that I wanted soya milk because it tasted so similar. Starbucks Frappe - again get soya milk in these. It will taste pretty much the same as the dairy version. Starbucks Iced Latte - now this is a variation and you can have this two ways. You could get soya milk in it. Butttt Starbucks actually offer oat milk as well; Oat milk and coffee go really well together so you could always try this as a combination. Independent coffee houses - now I don’t normally go iced when I go to indie places but I imagine that oat milk would be a winner for an iced drink. And that’s it. I can’t think of anything other drinks I have that require milk in them but if I think of anything else I can always add it in at a later date. Or if theres something you have that I haven’t included here feel free to comment below or dm me on instagram and I can try and help you out. If you got this far, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. But for now I’ll say bye and I’ll see you all soon for a brand new post. Love Jade xxx
